Parish church. Early C14 and later. Flint, brick stone dressings, part rendered,
plain tile roofs. West tower, nave, south porch, chancel, south vestry. Tower
C14, reduced in height 1772 when much repaired. Flint and stone diagonal buttresses
and plinths. West front largely brick in English bond. 2-light C19 Decorated style
window in larger opening, filled with C18 brickwork. Brick arched bell opening,
small stair window and other openings in north and south wall. Nave, rendered south
wall, diagonal buttress, 2 2-light windows, one with Y-tracery and simple hoodmould,
one C19 Perpendicular style with cusped tracery. C19 or later porch. South doorway,
2 orders of chamfers running into roll mouldings over the arch, moulded hood. North
wall, 2 2-light windows, one of C19 Y-tracery, one Perpendicular with animal stops
to hoodmould. Simple chamfered north doorway. Projecting rood stair. Stone, flint
and brick buttresses, the latter partly C16. Chancel of flint cobbles, diagonal
buttresses. 3-light C19 Perpendicular style east window. 2 2-light C19 south
windows, one Decorated, one erpendicular in style, similar Perpendicular north
window. Blocked doorway with basket head brick arch infilled in English bond
brickwork. Brick-filled rectangular opening with chamfered stone reveals. Interior:
Tall simple chamfered tower arch clipped by the nave ceiling. Vestigial chancel
arch. Simple arched piscina and sedilia. Fittings largely C19, including communion
rail with annulated shafts. Pair of C17 stone wall tablets, one a rectangular
monument with scrolled apron with skull beneath, skull finials and grape drops to
each side of blank panel; the other a similar rectangle with drop finials in form
of grapes, skull finials, garlands perhaps of figs to sides of illegible panel.
Brass to Marie Revers, died xi September 1592, and brass of her family (iii Sonnes
and vii daughters). Octagonal poor box.
