NETTLETON NETTLETON GREEN ST 87 NWN 2/371 Stile Cottage 24.3.77 II the description should be amended to read:-

House. Late medieval, remodelled and probably subdivided in C17 and extended in C18 and later. Built of limestone rubble with thatch roof and C17 stone stacks. PLAN: L-plan: medieval hall house, the probably 2-bay hall truncated to the right and with storeyed chamber to left; the stone walling is C17 and represents a rebuilding of the original medieval structure, possibly a replacement of timber-framed walling, and is continued through to the rear left wing which represents a C17 extension; at the same time the medieval house was truncated, floor inserted to former open hall and stacks built to gable ends of remodelled original structure and to rear gable of C17 extension, which was further extended by 2 rooms in the C18 and later. The existence of bread ovens to right-hand and rear left stacks implies that the medieval house was subdivided as 2 dwellings in the C17. EXTERIOR: One storey and attic. Main elevation (to remodelled medieval house) of 3-window range with timber lintels over late C19 and C20 2-light casements and plank door to right of centre. C19 outshut with pantile roof to right. 5-window left-hand return with similar casements and plank door to gable end of main block. Bread oven projection to rear stack. INTERIOR: C17 structure includes plank doors with strap hinges, beamed ceilings and wood bressumers over open fireplaces to right and rear left with bread ovens. Important elements of the medieval house have survived, although much remains obscured beneath later plasterwork etc: hall, truncated on right-hand side, retains chamfered principals of former open truss with mortices for removed arch bracing; mortice for windbrace removed during rebuilding of stone walls in C17 to front; the hall was probably originally of 2 bays; 2 and a half bay roof (including half of truncated bay to right and narrow bay to left of original hall) is heavily smoke-blackened with clasped and tenoned purlins and a rare surviving example of wattle hurdling (also smoke blackened) on which the thatch was set; to left of hall is collar truss with rod holes to soffit of collar for removed wattle and daub partition, clasped purlins and diagonally-set ridge with halved and pegged yoke; this truss is set above a transverse beam (with peg holes indicating original wood partition) underpinned by C17 stone wall and with medieval stop-chamfered arched timber doorway to rear; joists of early type in narrow bay to left (of unknown original function, but probably originally a cross passage) with trimmers marking position of stair, extend over beam into hall and may have formed internal jetty; further to left, and marking extent of smoke blackening to roof, is similar truss with principals tenoned into yoke with similar apex; transverse beam below has rod holes for former partition, replaced by stone wall in C17. Further bay, rebuilt in C17, to left.

House, C18, rubble stone with thatched roof and end wall stacks. 2 storeys, L-plan. South front with 2 eyebrow dormers over casements, thatch carried down between as porch, ground floor casement pair to right, single casement and pair to left. West end wall has door and casement above. Rear wing, west front has 4 ground floor windows, one first floor and one eyebrow dormer, all casements, mostly C20, and ridge stack.
