WINSLEY
WINSLEY VILLAGE
The Manor House

GV
II

House in 3 occupations, early C17, possibly on earlier core,
altered in early C19 and with large west addition dated 1905.
Rubble stone with stone slate roofs. Original range is long and
low with two ridge stacks and end stacks, west stack built into
1905 block, two storeys, with projecting mansard-roofed wing
running south from east end. Windows were originally recessed
hollow-moulded mullion windows, but are altered on first floor by
insertion of early C19 cast-iron small-paned casements with Tudor-
arched heads, also some matching early C19 windows. Ground floor
windows are large C19 three-light mullion windows, floor length
with plate glass and hoodmoulds. Left section of front has two
ground floor windows, flanking coped gabled projecting porch with
hoodmould over C17 plank doors with applied decoration of lozenge
and two very eroded figures. Porch roof has Jacobean style
panelling reused. First floor has 2-light, 2-light and 3-light
windows, the middle window early C19 entirely. Right section, to
right of main ridge stack, has former door to cross passage, Tudor-
arched, now window, one ground floor window, a C20 copy of those
elsewhere and door in angle to projecting wing. Two first floor 2-
light windows, that to right early C19 entirely. Mansard roofed
wing runs out at obtuse angle, possibly remodelling of older range.
End wall has similar ground floor window, C20 copy, and first floor
early C19 three-light matching those elsewhere. East end of main
range has large added porch. Rear has various additions but
original stair gable survives with large 3-light hollow-moulded
mullion-and-transom stair light. Leaded lights, one iron opening
light. Altered attic 2-light with C18 inserted casements. Large
1905 west addition is not of special interest, plain tiled with
chimney gable to front and long mullioned windows with hoodmoulds
and depressed-arched heads to lights. Built for Knatchbull family.
Interior: Former outside door at rear of through passage has
initials IMK, date 1612 and initials T and K linked by a heart,
said to relate to Kent family of Devizes, owners from 1600 and to
marriage of T. Kent and K. Reade in 1612. One fireplace in house
has overmantel made up from elaborate early C17 carved bed, other
bits also in sideboard and possibly also in porch roof. House is
presently divided into three, called the Manor House, Winsley Manor
and the 1905 House.
