1.2.58 - 11* Detached house.C15 origins, possibly not as a house, adapted Cl6 and C17, with later modifications. Local stone rubble,
with some cob, with bay 3 rendered, all colourwashed; thatched roof with full hips; brick chimney stacks. 'L'- plan: 2
storeys: 5 bays, random fenestration, of which bay 4 would seem to be a later extension. A variety of windows: to bay 1
ovolo-mould timber casements, 4-light below and 3-light above; to bay 2 are early casements of 3 lights with chamfered
mullions; lower bay 3 is blank, but to upper bay 3, and both levels bay 4 are steel casements of 2- and 3-lights. Left
of bay 2 a projecting colourwashed brick porch with thatched roof, having glazed outer doors, but the inner doorway has
a heavy timber frame shouldered at the head, of cl500, with boarded door. Small lean-to extension to rear. Internally
the plan of 2 rooms with cross passage: the south room has a flat-headed moulded surround fireplace against
cross-passage, with associated deep hollow-chamfer beams and staircase on other side of doorway having heavy turned
balusters under heavy rail with ball finial to newel and pendant droll probably all late C16/early C17: north room,
divided from passage by stud and panel screen, has a fireplace with scroll to the bressumer. On first floor a boarded
partition of in-and-out pattern. Of the four roof trusses, two are jointed crucks, one open and one closed, and the
others are either tie-beam trusses or post-and-truss structures, both closed and later modified; one surviving
windbrace; Some wattle-and-daub work-in roof space, and at north end a one-bay-wide smoke bay. Sequence of development
before C17 has been much debated. (VAG Reports, unpublished SRO, August 1973, May 1975, February and October l978).
