outbuildings II House. Now hotel. c;1907. Extended 1958. By A. W. Brewill for
himself. C18 Domestic Revival style. Brick with plain tile and
flat lead roofs. Moulded brick dressings, chamfered plinth,
Ionic pilasters, dentillated eaves, pedimented gables. 3 ridge
and 2 side wall stacks. 2 storeys plus attics, 11 bays wide.
Windows are glazing bar sashes and casements, some with moulded
hoods. Symmetrical garden front has central 2 storey canted bay
window with flat roof, flanked by single gabled wings. Ground
floor windows have pediments. Central French window flanked by 5
sashes. Above, 11 sashes. Above again, each gable has an
Ipswich casement with hood mould. Above again, 2 flat-roofed
dormers with small pediments. To right, matching 2 storey
addition, 1958, has 4 sashes on each floor, those to ground floor
having hoods. Rear elevation has to left, projecting 2 storey
wing. To right, 2 storey pilastered porch with half-round shaped
gable. Doorcase with pediment and eared architrave. To its left,
3 casements with pediments. Above, 3 casements. Above again, 2
pedimented dormers and to right, keystoned oval light in gable.
Rear wing has door to right, and irregular fenestration.
Casement in gable. To left, single storey service wing, C-plan.
Central glazed door below timber porch. To right, glazed
verandah. Interior has panelled and pilastered main rooms and 2
Classical timber fireplaces and overmantels. Panelled hall has
3 stained glass windows and moulded oak fireplace. Stairwell and
landing have each a keystoned double round headed opening with
paired central columns. Dogleg stair with intermediate landing
has turned balusters and pilastered newels carrying a pair of
heraldic lions. The window arrangement of the garden front
relates to Brewill's interest in cricket. (3 stumps, 2 umpires,
22 players, etc.)
