Holbeck Cemetery: memorial to Henry
Marsden approximately 20m west of
lodge GV II Memorial. c1876. Ashlar and marble. Square plan, rounded curb,
railing missing, plinth with inscribed panels, angels at
corners under bell-shaped canopies, coat of arms, stepped
statue base, almost full-size draped figure kneeling before a
low desk, hand raised.
The memorial commemorates Henry Rowland Marsden, JP, of Avenue
House, Leeds, Mayor of Leeds 1874-75, died 19 January 1876. He
was born in 1823, son of a retired soldier, and worked at
Marshall's Flax Mill from the age of 8 until 15, an apprentice
toolmaker. In 1848 he emigrated to New York and worked for a
firm of engineers, patenting several inventions, the most
important of which was his stone crushing machine. In 1862 he
returned to Leeds, was a member of the council 1866, elected
Liberal Alderman in 1872 and served as mayor 1873-75. He died
in 1876, aged 53; his statue stands on Woodhouse Moor
(Woodhouse Lane, qv). His wife, Sarah, died in 1909 and other
names on the memorial are: John Marsden, 1790-1875, Maria,
1793-1869 and Henry Rowland, 1859-1865.
