Joiners' shop, saw mill and outbuildings surrounding yard to rear of Foundry Street west range, now workshops. Probably early C19 with later C19 rebuilding and alterations. For Matthew Murray's steam engine manufactory. Red-brown brick, random and English garden wall bond, 1:5; slate roofs, stepped gutter brackets, stone gable copings to north range. 3 ranges enclosing the north, east and south side of the yard and abutting the buildings on the west side of Foundry Street (qv). North range: 3 storeys, 7 first-floor windows on south side, 8 on north, 2 windows wide. 12 panes, stone sills, cambered header and stretcher arches. Wide segmental-arched opening to ground floor left, reduced to window; other ground-floor details obscured by C20 lean-to. Stone quoins to ground floor left; a straight join to right of window 6 on south side and later brickwork suggests a rebuild of most of this range. East range: 3 storeys, 4 first-floor windows with loading door between; 3 single-flue chimneys along rear eaves. 9-pane casements, brick sills, cambered brick arches. Similar windows with stone lintels flanking narrow loading door with hoist to top storey. 3 segmental brick arches to ground floor: inserted window and C20 garage doors; inserted garage doors to left and far right. South range: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Roof extended to left to meet wall of east range. Tall rebuilt chimney stack to ridge between centre and right windows; central area of facade rebuilt. 3 segmental brick arches to ground floor, all reduced to window or door. 2-storey gabled block to right: 2 windows to first floor, 9-pane casements with cambered stretcher arch left. C20 additions project on right. The construction of textile machines, and later the finish to locomotives required extensive use of timber and skilled joiners were employed by Murray. Fine design and the finish of brass and wood were regarded as a hallmark of the Foundry. The joinery yard had a separate entrance through a gate on Water Lane to the north of the north range (the Joiners' shop); the east range was the saw mill. INTERIOR: not inspected.
