ITCHEN VALLEY D SU 5332 STATION HILL 148/14/10004 Barn Close House II House. 1910-11; by Halsey Ricardo, for Mrs. J. B. Simpson; altered later in C20. Stuccoed, English bond brick and flint, tile-hung and weatherboarded. Clay plain tile roof with gabled ends. Brick gable-end stacks, the east end stack corbelled out and with diagonally-set shafts. PLAN: Rectangular double-depth plan, with entrance/ stairhall projecting slighrly at the centre of the north front, study, lavatory and pantry at front, and with drawing room and dining room at the back overlooking the garden to the south study and drawing room now one room]; on the right [W] is the single-storey kitchen wing [raised to 2 storeys] and a single-storey service wing at an obtuse angle to the SW, the verandah on its south garden front now glazed. Domestic Revival style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 3-bay north front, projecting centre bay in English bond brick with coved eaves to large overhanging weatherboarded gable, round arch to integral porch with plank inner door and carefully arranged fenestration of small casement windows; roof to left and right carried down to lower eaves with 4-light casements below. Brick wing set back on right, raised to two storeys, and service wing set back at an angle to right again with pardy open front; verandah on south side now glazed. Rear, south garden front, 3 storeys, 5 bays, with 3 small tile-hung gables carried on curved brackets, various small sash and casement windows with glazing bars, to right of centre a large 2-storey semi-circular bay window with large casement windows, moulded wooden cornice and balustrade to balcony above with semi-circular flat-roof canopy; two garden doors on ground floor, one on either side of bay window. East end has rounded corners. INTERIOR not inspected, but reputedly intact. SOURCE: Architect's drawings are in Hampshire County Records Office, [ref: 39M73/BP676].
