LITTLE BOOKHAM CHURCH ROAD TQ/15/NW (north side) 2/179 Bookham Railway Station, including Station House and footbridge

GV II

Railway station. 1880s, for London and South Western Railway Company. Red brick in Flemish bond, red tile roofs; platform canopies of cast iron, timber, and corrugated sheet; footbridge of cast and wrought-iron. The principal range on the south (down-platform) side, including the station master's house (Station House) at the west end, booking hall, waiting rooms, and cloakrooms; a parallel shelter on the opposite side of the track; and the footbridge approx. 40 metres east of these. Vernacular Revival style. The south front has a single-storey 9-bay main range, a flat canopy on ornamental cast-iron brackets over bays 4 to 7, a doorway in the centre and segmental-headed sashed windows in the other bays, those in the 8th and 9th bays much smaller than the others (all the larger windows furnished with small-paned upper leaves); roof hipped at the right-hand end, with corniced ridge chimneys near each end. Continued to the right are 2 further short sections, each slightly set back and lower, the first with 3 small windows and a hipped roof with a large rectangular louvred ventilator on the receding ridge, and the other with a similar window and roof hipped at the right-hand end. At the left end is the projecting wing of Station House, which is L-plan, 2 storeys and 2 bays plus the wing, with a doorway in the angle protected by a canopy, a 2-light sashed window to the left, a 16-pane sash above breaking the eaves, a small 2-light window over the door; a rectangular bay window at ground floor of the wing with 2 sashes, and a tripartite sashed window above (and these windows matching those of the station building); roof hipped at left end, half-hipped over wing, with bargeboards; tall corniced chimneys at left end and right-hand side wall. The platform side of this range has similar openings; and, except for the house, is protected by a pitched canopy carried on a row of 5 cast-iron columns with foliated caps and ornamental brackets to the tie beams. The opposite platform has a matching canopy with a brick rear wall, a waiting room attached to the rear of this with a segmental- headed doorway and 2 windows (boarded at time of survey 1988). The footbridge to the east, U-plan, is carried by a square set of cast-iron columns at each end, the deck protected by latticed wrought-iron fences with square wooden newels which have turned finials, and approached by straight flights of steps with half- landings, which have cast-iron open strings and ornamental open-work balusters. The station forms a group with the tunnel-entrance to the east and the bridge to the west (q.v.).
