ST DAVID'S HILL (east side) 52 and 54

II Pair of large houses, now divided into flats. c.1880s. Yellow brick in Flemish bond with red brick bands and freestone dressings. Hipped slate roof with red ridge tiles; red brick chimney shafts with enriched cornices; some round chimney pots with louvred tops; cast iron rainwater goods. High Victorian eclectic style.

Plan: deep rectangular plans with rooms heated by end and axial chimney stacks.

Exterior: two storeys plus attic; entrance blocks two storey. Symmetrical, four bay front, the centre bays broken forward and taller with crow-stepped gables to the front. Lower roofed outer entrance blocks have moulded brick eaves brackets and porches with steep crow-stepped gables in the angles with the centre bays. The porches have pilastered outer doorways with carved capitals and oriental double ogee arches to the outer doorways. Shouldered plank front doors with Gothic strapwork hinges and arched overlights. All windows have cranked arched stone heads and are glazed with two-pane sashes. Centre bays have canted bays with crenellated parapets above an enriched cornice. The window arches spring from carved floral capitals. Above the bay, each first floor has paired sashes with a one-light window in gable. Outer bays have one ground floor window next to the porch and one to the first floor.

INTERIOR: inner porches with half glazed door with four panes and two panels below. Rectangular overlight. No.52 has panelled doors and other original fittings remaining, including attractive floor tiles.

Group value with Caröe's Church of St David (qv), adjacent to the left. This is a striking pair of High Victorian houses at the upper end of a good street with many historic buildings.
