and attached railings GV II Terrace of 4 houses and attached railings. c1828-1832 with
later alterations including mid-C20 extensions to rear.
Pinkish-brown brick in English Garden Wall Bond to rear with
painted stucco front and side facades, Welsh slate roof and
cast-iron dressings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements and attics, 12 bays
arranged 3:3:3:3: Horizontal rustication to basement and
ground floor. Moulded first-floor band to bays 7 to 9
surmounted by 2 plain pilasters to full height.
First floor: 10-pane French windows with margin-lights
throughout.
Second floor: band with pulvinated cornice; 3/6 sashes with
sills throughout. Stepped cornice, blocking course.
Ground floor: entrances to 3rd and 4th bays are half-glazed
doors, unglazed door to 8th bay, all with roll-moulded lower
panel, doors to 3rd and 4th bays are embellished with
lion-and-wreath knockers, all with overlights with glazing
bars and with panelled reveals, and surrounds of engaged Doric
pilasters, frieze with triglyphs and metopes, cornice to 4th
bay.
To 11th bay a 6-panel door between margin lights with ornate
fanlight within distyle Roman Doric porch with plain, engaged
pilasters, frieze, cornice with guttae. 1/1 sashes to bays 1,
2, 5 and 6 with flat, rusticated arches, 4-pane sashes to bays
7 and 9, 12-pane sashes to bays 10 and 12, all with sills.
Basement entrances to 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th bays are panelled
doors; mainly 8/8 sashes, 3/6 sash. Coal cellars extend under
pavement. Roof hipped to right, ridge stacks.
Right return to ground floor has two 6/6 sashes with
decorative blind boxes, to first floor are similar French
windows with balcony, second-floor band continues, 3/6 sashes,
cornice and blocking course continue.
To rear: 6/6 sashes and 3/6 sashes. First-floor balconies have
rod-anthemion-and-scroll motif; anthemion-and-lion-mask motif;
and anthemion-and-scroll motif.
INTERIOR, No.9: shutters to ground floor windows.
Adamesque-Rococo chimneypiece to right-hand room. Ceiling
roses. Archway to rear dogleg staircase with stick balusters
and wreathed handrail. Mainly 4-panel doors. First floor has panelled sliding doors between rooms and acorn-moulded
cornice.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and to sides of steps have
double oval surmounted by fleur-de-lys to Nos 7, 8 and 10;
lancet railings with anthemion finials to stanchions to No.9.
HISTORICAL NOTE: a complete square of stucco terraces,
Clarendon Square (qv) was laid out to original plans by PF
Robinson, architect, of Brook Street, Mayfair. The houses were
completed c1832, the gardens in the Square were planted with
trees in May 1830.
