Terrace of 9 houses on sloping site, numbered from right to
left. 1828-1834, with later additions and alterations
including extensions to rear of no special interest.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, Welsh slate
roofs except to No.14 are mock slates and Nos 16 & 22 have
cement-tiles, and cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, with basements except to Nos 18 and 20,
and 18 first-floor windows, 2 to each house. Continuous ramped
first floor band and similar frieze, cornice and coped
parapet.
Stucco detailing includes first floor band surmounted (from
left) end Doric pilasters with central recess to 6 dwellings
(Nos 20-30 (even), the capitals missing to leftmost, otherwise
with Ionic columns to three dwellings to right (Nos 14, 16 and
18), 2 to each house. 6/6 sashes except those to No.14 are 2/2
sashes and to No.22 are 1/1 sashes. Plain reveals and sills
throughout.
Ground floor: steps to left side entrances, mainly 3 and
4-panel doors, some part-glazed, with overlights mainly with
glazing bars. Those three to right (Nos 14, 16 and 18 have
fielded-Doric-pilastered porches with wreaths to frieze,
cornice and pediment. Those 4 to left, Nos 24, 26, 28 and 30
have pilastered doorcases, frieze and hood.
Windows, from left: 1/1 sash; 1/1 sash; 6/6 sash; canted bay
(No.22), the centre a 2/2 sash between 1/1 sashes; three 6/6
sashes; 5-sided bay with replacement casements. Sashes with
plain reveals and with sills.
Basements (from left): three 4/8 sashes in elliptically-arched
surrounds, sills, otherwise openings partly blocked. Cornice
missing to left (No.30) and partly missing to No.22.
INTERIOR: No.18 has dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and
wreathed handrail.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings have bars with open diamond
finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Grove Street was laid out in 1828, the west
side and lower part of the east side built by 1834.
Forms an architectural group with Nos 32, 34 and 36, Grove
Street (qv), Nos 38-46 (even) Grove Street and with No.5

Regent Street (qv).
