Pair of houses, now house (to left) and flats (to right) and attached railings. Numbered right to left, described left to right. c1824, with later alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with scored stucco facades to front and side, painted to right, Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements, and attics to rear, 2 first-floor windows arranged 1:1. First floor: 20-pane French windows with 5-pane side-lights, that to left has blind box, within wider, elliptically-arched, chamfered surround. Second-floor band, four 6/6 sashes in moulded surrounds. Frieze, cornice, blocking course. Ground floor, 3 steps to central entrances (alike): 6-panel doors with overlights with glazing bars, within surround of Doric pilasters with entablature. 6/6 sashes within wider, elliptically-arched surrounds with moulded architraves. Basement has part-glazed, central doors, 3/6 sash to left, replacement tripartite sash to right. First floor has continuous balconies with figure-of-eight motif. INTERIOR: to left, staircase with stick balusters, marble fireplace to ground floor, tiled fireplace to first floor. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: lancet railings to sides of steps and across front. HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Street was laid out 1823-1824; these are reputed to be the first two houses to have been built. The houses correspond in design with Nos 20A, 22-30 (even) Regent Street and No.29 Portland Street (qqv).
