BRIGHTON,
KEMP TOWN PLACE (North side),
Nos.1-7 (Consecutive) and attached walls, piers, including lamp brackets to Nos. 2 & 6A

(Formerly Listed as:
KEMP TOWN PLACE,
Nos 1-14 (consec), Nos 1-3 (consec) Rock Grove)

20/08/71

II

Includes: Nos. 2 AND 3 ROCK GROVE.
Mews. 1824-1828. Cobbles, most covered in pitch, with brick
dressings and lacing courses; some stucco. Roofs of slate,
that to No.2 has been turnerised.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: built as a group with Nos 8-14 Kemp Town Place
(qv). The 2 ranges are planned as straight parallel lines,
with the east end of Nos 1-7 bending slightly to the south.
Although the arrangement of elements is irregular, the whole
is given a unified appearance by similar scale (each has 2
storeys with party walls expressed above the roof) materials
and features. The following description, therefore, will
detail each unit rather than a common type.
No.1 has a 5-window range: flat-arched entrance of C20 set in
2-storey, camber-arched recess; sashes of first floor window
in this range have been restored to an original 3 x 3 design,
which appears to have been a common pattern throughout the
group; to either side of the entrance range on both floors is
a segmental-arched opening; on the ground floor of the
first-window range is a stables door, now garage, the window
above is segmental arched.
No.2 is similar to No.1, except that the entrance range is not
recessed and the ground floor is stuccoed over; to either side
of its C20 entrance is one flat-arched window with 4 x 4
sashes of early C19 design; casement windows to first floor;
stable doors of late C19 or early C20.
No.4A (formerly No.3) is of unpainted cobbles with a 2-window
range; flat arches to all openings; ground floor much altered;
first-floor windows are paired in continuous brick surround, a
treatment repeated elsewhere in the group.
No.4 has a 6-window range; flat-arched entrance in centre; the
first-floor windows are paired, each couple with a common
brick surround, but the spacing is irregular. No.4B has a
2-window range; its entrance is set in a round-arched recess
and has sidelights; to the right a pair of flat-arched
windows; one first-floor window at left wall with No.4 is in
common brick surround with windows to the right.
No.5 has a 3-window range; its flat-arched entrance is set in
a recess, the whole much altered in C20; first-floor has
remnants of original sashes, but these are set in C20
surrounds; to either side of entrance a round-arched window,
and to the left a stable, now garage; on first floor to either
side of entrance axis is a segmental-arched window.
Nos 6A and 6B have a 5-window range between them, the ground
floors of each have been covered in stucco, the patterns of
the original brick dressing picked out in white paint; 2
flat-arched entrances, to the left of each are 2 windows, one
of which is tripartite; to the first floor some sashes of
original design: in first-, third- and 4th-window range 8 x 8,
in second- 6 x 6; tall window in 5th- has transoms of 4 panes;
these are the only units in the row to have parapets.
No.7 has a 3-window range with an entrance in the centre. The
windows to Nos 6A, 6B and 7 have projecting sills.
The elevations to Nos 2 and 3 Rock Grove follow, and are in
the bend in the east end of the range. Taken together their
elevation has a 4-window range, this wall made from unpainted
cobbles; there are flat-arched windows to the ground floor and
camber-arched windows to the first floor; all windows but the
blocked one in 4th-window range have projecting sills; opening
in the third-window range on the ground floor was once an
entrance but is now blocked; entrance to No.3 Rock Grove set
in stucco-faced elevation to Rock Grove. This listing applies
to units numbered 2 and 3 Rock Grove. Piers to entrances at
either end of the mews were once spanned by archways.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
