Includes: Swan Hotel and attached wall BANBURY STREET.
Public house. Datestone: T/ D/ A/ ANNO DOMINI 1668; C19
additions. Painted coursed limestone rubble with ashlar
dressings; gabled old tile roof with brick end stacks, that to
left rebuilt. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic; 2-window range. Moulded plinth
and continuous label mould to ground floor broken by replaced
entrance. Entrance to left of centre has doorcase with
bracketed open pediment and fanlight over 6-panel door. Ground
floor has 5-light recessed-chamfered mullioned windows
flanking entrance; first floor has similar 4-light windows; 3
renewed gabled roof dormers with 2-light leaded casements.
Right return to Banbury Street has gable with 2-light window
and large wing to right under hipped slate roof.
Left return has continuous label moulds over 4-light ground
floor window and 3-light first floor window; stone rear wing
has brick first floor and slate roof; carriage entrance to
rear yard; varied fenestration including sashed first-floor
windows. C19 brick rear wing, formerly separate stable block.
Corner has enriched iron sign bracket; smaller bracket to
front.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: wall attached to right end extends approx
22m and adjoins the wall attached to Public Library, Bridge
Street (qv).
Important corner site at junction of Warwick Road with Southam
Road and Banbury Street.
