I

Church. c1286 (dedication) south-west tower and chancel; nave
and chancel extensively altered in mid C18; restored 1923-4.
MATERIALS: coursed rubble limestone with some dressed stone
and plaster; ashlar dressings; some herringbone stonework to
chancel; steeply pitched old tile roofs with coped stone
gables.
PLAN: single-bay chancel, 2-bay nave with 3-stage south-west
tower and small vestry to south-east.
EXTERIOR: chancel has ashlar and rubble east wall with
double-chamfered pointed window opening with inserted C18
round-headed window, diagonal buttress to right. Side walls
with cornices; north side is plastered, with C18 round-headed
window with ashlar sill and surround with imposts and key
block; south side has exposed herringbone and rubble with
plaster above, and C18 window as to north with re-set
single-chamfered lancet to east.
Nave has ashlar north side with plain plinth and top frieze
and cornice; two C18 windows as to chancel; south side has
rubble footings and signs of blocked window to left of two C18
windows.
Vestry has hipped roof and incorporates 8 late C17/early C18
headstones, 2 illegible, and parts of 2 chest tombs, most to
members of the Southam family; round-headed south window has
jambs formed of balusters from a chest tomb; east entrance has
pegged frame and wide-board door.
Tower has south-west diagonal buttress, and offset band over
lower stage; rubble with ashlar top stage over plat band, with
crenellated parapet and lead spouts; painted sundial with
metal gnomon is dated 1845, with lettering: I DIE TODAY & LIVE
TOMORROW. East entrance with wide-board door to left of coped
end wall of former aisle with blocked arch, south 2-light C16
single-chamfered mullioned window; 2nd stage has south lancet
and west trefoil; C18 top stage has elliptical-headed bell
openings; painted sundial to south.
West end has pilaster strips, top frieze and hipped roof,
renewed round-headed entrance with leaded fanlight over paired
3-panel doors, round window above.
INTERIOR: plastered walls and flagged floors; chancel has wood
sill course with egg-and-dart moulding, rich top dentilled and
modillioned wood cornice to ceiling, and ovolo-moulded window
frames with imposts and key blocks; fielded panelling to east
wall below sill course; exposed herringbone masonry with
quoins below dado to north with blocked square recess;
round-headed doorway to south has 6-fielded-panel door;
double-chamfered elliptical chancel arch.
Nave has dado rail and top cornice and ceiling with
rough-chamfered beams; late C13 double-chamfered tower arch to
west end of south wall with part of blocked arcade to east,
and later blocked round-headed window.
Tower has exposed masonry and chamfered beams.
FITTINGS: chancel has C12 pillar piscina with scalloped
capital to octagonal shaft; rails have column-on-vase
balusters to moulded top rail and scrolly cast-iron supports
flanking gate. Nave has c1740 fielded-panelled box pews with
H-hinges to doors, the 2 to east larger; tower has ex-situ
timber stocks.
MEMORIALS: c1300 coffin lid to nave.
