SP2050 SHIPSTON ROAD (A 3400), Alscot Park 1912-1/11/151 (West side (off)) Terrace walls to N and W of Alscot Park and ha-ha continuing S round garden

GV II

Terrace walls extending approx. 53.5m along River Stour to north of house and 46m along garden to west side with 21.5m return east, ending in short return to join south-west angle of house. Ha-ha attached to south end of west terrace wall extends south and then east round gardens of house. East end of north terrace has return extended around service court cut into slope of ground. Probably c1750 by Edward Woodward. Ashlar and rock-faced masonry; marble and cast-iron. Balustrading has ogee arches and cornice with square piers at intervals supporting marble urns of differing designs. North terrace has central opening to remains of steps down to river, one octagonal pier remains; similar steps to east end; each end has polygonal bay with stone bench. West terrace has 2 ramped sections with steps alongside; south end has polygonal bay. Return to house has paired cast-iron Gothick-style gates with panelled octagonal piers supporting urns. Terrace around service court has gateway to east side, and retaining walls to south end of east side and short south side with entrances to underground chambers. Ha-ha has rock-faced masonry with piers at intervals with caps; cast-iron cresting; directly south of the house is a gate.
