No.26
GV II
Small house in row. Late C16, with later alterations.
Rendered, with pantile roof and brick stacks. Current layout
is one small front room with a passage formed to its left, and
a narrower rear room, to the right, to which is attached a C20
extension; the house may have formed part of a larger property
originally on the site.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, all late C20 windows; two 2-light
casement above broad 5-light with transom. Part-glazed door,
far left, in deep reveal. Slight plinth, dying, left, to
pavement level.
INTERIOR: the ground floor only was inspected, further
information taken from VAG Report of April 1986. A narrow
passage has, to the right, a thin partition, and at half depth
of the building is a large C16 chamfered beam with a run-out
stop, which continues across the principal room, with a prop
at a junction with a smaller beam at right angles. Also in the
passage, in the left party wall is a blocked door opening, to
No.28 (qv). The main chimney breast has a C19 fireplace, and
there is a narrow staircase to its left. The rear wall of the
room is of considerable thickness, but has been opened up to
give to the rear room, which also has a thick outer wall.
The roof over the main range is late C16 with a cranked
collar, butt purlins with chamfers and square stops, and was
earlier of narrower span (pitch line of an earlier roof said
to be visible, and contemporary with roof in No.28)); over the
room in the wing the roof is C18 with tusk tenons to purlins.
