GV II

Former vicarage to Church of St Thomas (qv) now divided into 2 dwellings. c1860 by SS Teulon for the Revd George Blissett. Local grey and red stone with Bath stone dressings in polychromatic design, Welsh slate roof, stone chimney stacks. STYLE: Gothic Revival. PLAN: L-shaped plan, with The Old Vicarage forming the main west block, and East Vicarage representing the former servants' wing. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics to part, some single storey. South garden elevation of 3+3 bays, with single storey unit to east of 1+2 canted forward bays. Chamfered plinth, ashlar quoins, offset buttresses. Mostly sash windows in quoined ashlar surrounds having shouldered heads, the single-storey range having chamfer mullioned windows to two left-hand bays. the main range has narrow central bay, with steps up to French door with fanlight, protected by open, gabled ironwork porch, offset stack rising from eaves to right, to left an angled bay window with pyramidal roof and finial and to right a projecting gabled bay with paired sash windows and gable oculus, ashlar stack to right gable. East Vicarage south elevation has 3-light windows below and 2-light windows to first floor, bays 1 and 2, bay 3 rises under gable with large ground-floor window, paired sashes above and sash window to attic, ridge stack between bays 2 and 3, and large truncated stack at right end. Single-storey wing to right has inserted French doors, then a single-light window with paired sash windows above and smaller sash to attic. Bay 2 has a 4-light chamfered mullioned and transomd window with paired sashes above. Bay 3 has a tall 2-light mullioned and transomd window to first floor, with similar window on curve and another on ground floor to left of return. Bay 4 has a pointed-arched recess with shield and hoodmould to first floor, with paired lancets to the gable. Cross ridge stack to right of bay 1. North elevation of 8 irregular bays, generally in character of remainder of building, in the single-storey wing bay 1 has a boarded door with decorative iron hinges, bay 2 has a single-storey leanto, and bay 3 is projecting, gabled with an attic window. Bay 5 has a gable breaking the eaves, and attic window. INTERIOR: has, in main block, panelled doors in architraves with slender attached columns and panelled soffites, shutters, trefoil-cut ceiling friezes, good stone fireplace with decorative tile surround in entrance hall, dog-leg staircase with moulded splat balusters and matching 2-bay arcaded screen at base of stair with quatrefoil frieze. Servants' wing has panelled doors, red and black quarry tile floors, fireplaces, dog-leg staircase with stick balusters. The Revd George Blissett for whom the vicarage was built was, with SS Teulon, his architect, also responsible for the Church of St Thomas (qv) and St Thomas Terrace (qv).
