walled garden

GV II

Gardener's cottage with attached tower and screen wall, and
walled garden. The tower probably early C19, and probably by
George Webster of Kendal, the walled garden probably of the
same date, and the cottage probably mid C19. Roughly coursed
mixed rubble with quoins, slate roof.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: the cottage has a single-depth double-fronted
plan on a north-south axis facing east, and is attached at the
south end to the north side of the tower. 2 storeys, 1+3
windows. The 3-window cottage, almost symmetrical, has a
square-headed doorway offset slightly right, with a panelled
door and shallow overlight, flanked by 2 large rectangular
6-pane sashes on each floor, a square 6-pane sash above the
doorway; and a former doorway abutting the tower at the left
end now blocked and a 6-pane sash inserted in its place. All
these openings have thin plain surrounds and rectangular
lintels. Ridge chimney offset left, gable chimney to right,
both corniced. The tower, which is also 2 storeyed but rises
above the cottage and is distinguished by a tall oversailing
parapet with stepped crenellation and a turret at the
north-west corner, has a 6-pane sash offset left at ground
floor, with Gibbsian surround, and a 6-pane sash at 1st floor
like those of the main range. Attached to the left corner is a
gabled screen wall with the back of a garden alcove extruded
on this side, under a monopitched roof. The boundary wall to
the walled garden, of slobbered rubble with stone slate
coping, approx. 3 metres high, has a straight east side linked
to the north corner of the cottage and the south corner of the
tower, straight south and west sides and a curved north side.
Attached to the outside of the section next to the cottage is
a range of single-storey lean-to outbuilding, the south half
with windows and a stone slate roof and the north half with a
garage and a Welsh slate roof; and next to this is a tall
gateway now furnished with metal gates.
Forms group with Ingmire Hall to south-west (qv).
