Roman Catholic church with attached presbytery. 1878, by
Goldie and Child. Yellow brick at ground-floor level, brown
brick above with red and blue brick dressings (side walls of
common brick); slate roofs. Church at right-angles to street,
with nave and low north and south aisles; presbytery linked to
right-hand (east) side. Early English style.
EXTERIOR: gabled 3-window facade; tall 2-centred arched
2-light window with plate-tracery and central mullion with
statue in niche, flanked by tall lancets; gable with corner
pinnacles, blind arcading and 2 small lancets, surmounted by
large idiosyncratic bellcote with steep mansard roof. Side
walls have stepped 3-light windows. front of south aisle has
large moulded brick arched doorway. To right of this, gabled
3-storey 2-window facade of presbytery has doorway to right,
and segmental-headed sashed windows without glazing bars,
those to the upper floors set in a giant blank arch.
INTERIOR: gallery to south-west end (entrance), 6-bay nave,
with low aisles to each side, sanctuary with side chapels,
that to north-west with choir loft (now infilled). Nave
arcades with circular columns and stepped pointed arches.
Canted square panelled front to gallery, supported on slender
iron columns, and has ornate jettied sub-structure. Simple
stair to south-east side. Santuary with onyx altar rail
decorated with cusps and ball flower ornament. 3-stage stone
altar with onyx front, and with tabernacle to rear section.
Timber reredos of 5 panels with crocketed pinnacle to centre.
4-light open timber screens to both arched openings into Lady
Chapel to north-west side. Similarly detailed 6-light screen
to north-east side. Triple purlin roof supported by
arch-braced trusses.
