SS5632 LITCHDON STREET 684-1/5/201 (North East side) Garden walls to allotment to rear of Penrose Almshouses

GV II

Garden walls to allotment rear of Penrose Almshouses (qv). Probably C17. Cob with slate coping. The walls enclose a large garden behind the almshouses, with access from the almshouse court via a passageway, suggesting that the garden is contemporary with the almshouses, completed 1627. Tall brown cob walls with some unfortunate C20 cement repair. HISTORICAL NOTE: cob buildings are known from the High Street in Barnstaple, nevertheless; it is an unusual urban building material and important to the fine C17 almshouse complex.
