II

Church. Designed 1720 by William Smith of Warwick as the Church of St Peter at Arches, Lincoln. Demolished 1930. Re-erected and extended 1936 by William Watkins of Lincoln, on present site. C20 brick, with C18 ashlar dressings and copper roofs. Classical style. PLAN: tower, nave with aisles, chancel with apse, vestry. EXTERIOR: moulded plinth and cornice, coped parapet with corner pedestals, rusticated brick quoins. Most windows have round heads and moulded architraves with keystones. Tower, 4 stages, has clasping pilasters, string courses, eaves cornice, balustrade and urn finials topped with wind vanes. To east, a doorcase with Doric pilasters, stepped cornice, round head with keystone, and C20 doors. Above it, a lamp bracket. To north and south, a small double window with round heads and keystones. Second stage has a window to east. Third stage has a round opening with keystones to west, and a clock on the other sides. Bell stage has a louvred opening on each side similar to the windows. South aisle has 4 windows and to east, a round headed doorway with a round window above it, both with keystones. West end has an apse with parapet. North aisle has to left a door with a round window above it, and to right, 3 windows. Beyond and above, a round window. Each aisle has a window in the east end, and north aisle has a window in the west end. Vestry, to north, single storey, has a slate roof and a round headed doorway flanked by single windows. INTERIOR has 5-bay arcades with Doric piers and moulded round arches with keystones. Plaster ceilings with moulded cornices throughout. East end has a full width bow fronted wooden gallery with a C18 dogleg stair at each end, with vase and stem balusters. On the gallery, a restored C18 organ and case. Chancel and aisles have panelled dadoes. South aisle chapel and vestry doorways have reset fragments of C12 stonework. North aisle has, to west, a C19 traceried wooden screen and a stained glass window with the arms of the Diocese. North side has 2 late C19 windows. Chancel has a plain aumbry and piscina, 2 niches, C18 wrought-iron altar rail and 2 mid C19 stained glass windows. FITTINGS include a square baluster shaped alabaster font, C18,

with swagged bowl and Latin inscription. C20 bracketed wooden cover. Wrought-iron skeleton pulpit on wooden foot, C19. Plain benches, some with poppyheads. Oak eagle lectern. No memorials. (Buildings of England : Lincolnshire: Pevsner N: Lincolnshire: London: 1989-: 497).
