249/0/10222 HARROW ROAD W10 13-JUN-01 HRH Augustus Frederick

H.R.H. Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex d.1843 A massive ledger slab on a base, surrounded by 14 cylindrical posts, all of grey Aberdeen granite, by M.W.Johnson, mason. The coped upper slab has an inscription in sunken capital letters. The surrounding posts, topped with circular caps, formerly had linking bronze chains between them. Sussex, the 6th son of George III, was noted for his Liberal sympathies. His marriage to a commoner and his horror of being buried in the royal vault at Windsor made him the first member of the royal family to opt for burial in a public place. The monument, prominently sited, is remarkable for its severity and massiveness. See Illustrated London News, 8th November 1856.
