II
Wayside war memorial, Dedicated in 1923. Designed by F.Davies, MSA, architect. Ashlar sandstone memorial comprising a Latin Cross set on a square plinth with recessed panels, some with relief decoration. The plinth stands on a hexagonal 2-stepped base, which is set forward of a low ashlar masonry wall added to the site in 1949 to commemorate the Fallen of WW2. The cross plinth carries the inscription IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY/OF THE MEN OF HOOLE AND NEWTON/WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVESIN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/MEN OF PEACE,THEY WAXED VALIANT IN WAR/AND WON A VICTORY/TO BE USED/BY GODS HELP/FOR THE PEACE OF THE WORLD/AND FOR THE WELFARE OF ALL MEN/EASTER DAY 1923. The ashlar wall incorporates an inscribed panel which reads THIS MEMORIAL RECORDS THE NAMES OF THE MEN OF HOOLE/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-45/(NAMES)" AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM"
