Sundial in the grounds of Alkmund's Church
GV
II
Sundial and base. Early C18, contemporary with the Church of St. Alkmund. Dressed sandstone with bronze plate. The circular column is 1.3m. high and set above two circular steps with a lowest, third step which is square in plan with rounded corners. The column is vase-shaped, with gadrooning to its swollen lower body. The circular plate is inscribed with 24 hours in Roman numerals and has its original triangular gnomon.
The building has group value with the Church of St Alkmund, Church Street, Whitchurch [q.v.]
This building is added to the list as a good early C18 example of a churchyard sundial, complete with its plate and gnomon. It groups well with the neighbouring church
