GV II

Six terrace houses, with late C19 and C20 shops and offices (No.7A is rear wing of No.7). 1764-1765. Speculative development by Prince Hoare. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, double pitched slate roofs with dormers and moulded stacks (truncated to Nos 2 and 3) to party walls. PLAN: Double depth plans. EXTERIOR: Three storeys with attics and basements, each house has three-window range. Continuous coped parapet, modillion cornice and ground floor platband, moulded eared architraves to second floor windows, moulded architraves to first floor windows with cornices (those above doors with pediments) and bracketed sills. Originally with six/six-pane sash windows, some altered. No.2 to right has splayed reveals to six/six-pane sashes with horns to upper floors, cornices and lowered sills to first floor and C20 shop. No.3 has six/six-pane sash windows, splayed architraves, lowered sills and pediment to right and cornices to left of first floor windows and moulded architrave and cornice to six-panel door glazed to top, to right. No.4 has horned plate glass sash windows, original first floor sill level and cornices flanking pediment over first floor windows. Mid C19 projecting shop has modillion cornice, three semi circular arches to left with plate glass shop windows, ornate spandrels and panelled pilasters that flank shop and support right hand corner of flat roof over set back door. Left return of shop retains original shutters. No.5 has plate glass sash windows in unaltered architraves with lowered sills and balconettes to first floor that to left with cornice. To ground floor left moulded architrave and cornice to six-panel door, to right restored mid/late C19 shop. Office of Mowbray A Green, architect and historian of Bath, in 1906. No.6 has six/six-pane sash windows without horns, six/nine panes with lowered sills to the first floor, and 1992 Victorian style shop by Graham Finch. No.7 has six/six-pane sash windows, those to second floor with thick glazing bars, lowered sills and splayed reveals to first floor. 1883 shop by TB Silcock, in course of restoration, has segmental heads to plate glass shop windows and leaded cathedral glass overlights. Left return of No.7 has triple depth with three gable ends and various windows to centre. Three storey rear wing (No.7A) has tripartite window to second floor and Venetian window to rear of first floor. c1880 shopfront. INTERIORS: Not inspected. HISTORY: This speculative development was carried out by Bath¿s leading sculptor, Prince Hoare: the Council Minutes for 20th June 1765 record consent for "water for Mr. Hoare's seven new built Hoare's Buildings".
