05/08/75 GV II Pair of terrace houses. c1800-1804 with late C19 alterations. Possibly by Charles Harcourt Masters.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, painted to ground floor on north side, and slate roofs.
PLAN: Double depth block, entered from south side, but with principal elevation and garden to north.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, with two windows each and broad blind centre section. Second floor plain tripartite sashes, above Venetian windows with glazing bars to No. 5, plain to No. 4. Ground floor has single and paired sashes, plain to No. 4 and twelve-pane to No. 5. Tuscan pillared and pedimented doorcases, No. 4 with early door with arched glazed panels. Channelled pilasters to centre bays, first floor platband, and frieze, cornice, blocking course and parapet. Hipped roof has central and end ashlar stacks. Rear to No. 4 has narrow three storey parapeted wing with plain sashes in flush ashlar surrounds in coursed rubble, and later 2 storey range, with plain sashes over six-panel door under slab hood with moulded edge, and brackets. Set back main wall also has plain sashes. No. 5 has some twelve-pane sashes, with boundary wall and door to small enclosed yard, and three storey narrow wing with big twelve-pane sashes above paired nine-pane set low to right.
INTERIORS: No. 4 inspected by Bath Council 1983. Georgian fireplace on ground floor decorated with garlands and another Victorian console. Stairs have Victorian newel and slim moulded banisters in the middle. Georgian fireplaces on first floor and remains of Georgian staircase to top floor.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: North side is full width coursed rubble wall approx 1.8m high, with two pairs of rusticated ashlar piers to flat pyramid cappings, and cast iron gate to No. 4. Lower walls also return at party divisions. Part of very long speculative row, with many variations, but retaining substantial original detail, especially to north elevations.
