Pair of houses now offices, formerly part of the St John's Hospital complex (qv). c1760 by William Sainsbury, carpenter with C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, double Roman tile roofs. PLAN: Houses are paired in common frontage and have deep rear wings. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, five window, all twelve-pane sashes in moulded architraves, and to sill band at first floor. Two wide C20 dormers, each with four-light small-pane casements. At first and second floors bay three blind light, bay four blank to second floor, basement has two twelve-pane sashes each side, to small area with railings. To centre, on broad flight of three stone steps, two panelled doors, moulded architraves and with single cornice hood. Offset plinth, moulded cornice above first floor, cornice with blocking course and parapet above second floor. Each gable has deep ashlar stack. Return to right has one blind and one twelve-pane sash at each level. Main cornices are carried only over window heads on this front which abuts main hospital frontage in Court. No.4 has long wing projecting beyond north front of Chandos Buildings (qv), single small dormer in mansard roof above one+two twelve-pane sashes in architraves at upper levels, all as main front. Ground floor windows plain reveals. Wing has ridge stack, and eaves stack at outer end. Rear of two houses in rubble, with some rebuilding or extension in ashlar, original rear wall, set back in narrow court, has twelve-pane sash at three levels, in one of brought forward wings glazed and blocked early twelve-pane sash. INTERIORS: Not inspected. No.5 has an unusual serpentine-railed staircase, reflecting the house¿s construction by a master carpenter. HISTORY: This building was inserted between the main hospital range and the formerly free-standing Chandos Buildings. Its old-fashioned appearance reflects the involvement of an artisan in its design.
