CHURCH LANE Widcombe (East side) Gothic Cottage with steps, gateway, and boundary wall 05/08/75

Detached house. Dated 1854. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, stone slate roofs. PLAN: Small scale picturesque cottage with Gothick detail, with main range of reversed T-plan plus small porch to front, and lower wing to left, with further entry. EXTERIOR: Front range has two storeys two windows, with flush gable to left having two-light above three-light ovolo mould stone mullioned casements with drip course to long dropped ends and flush sills, to right small porch, with separate transverse gabled roof, with pointed part glazed door to sought, and cusped trefoil lights to road and north, latter under small recessed diamond panel. All gables have saddle back copings to kneelers, and front gable carries date 1854. Large ridge stack on square base with five conjoined diagonal shafts. Left return plain, with quatrefoiled oculus flanked by long horizontal panels with trefoil ends, at mid height. At end low wing, with pantile roof, having nine-pane casement with pointed heads to top panes, and six-panel door. South return has coped gable with quatrefoil oculus above three-light ovolo mould stone mullioned small pane casement, and at ground floor canted bay with two:three:two-lights to hollow mould stone mullions, and stepped hipped stone roof. Rear wing, also to gable has one over two small cusped lancets. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Front of low entry wing broad stone paved landing, flight of stone steps with winders down to doorway with pointed panelled door in stone boundary wall to horizontal coping, stopped to square ashlar pier at outer end.
