Terrace house, now flats. Completed 1790 with C19 alterations. By John Palmer, built by Charles Viner. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, painted to ground floor, rubble and ashlar to rear, Welsh slate double pile parapeted mansard roof, raised to full third floor to rear, with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to front on coped party wall to left. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, single-bay three-window front. First floor has three grouped plate glass sashes, narrower to left and right, in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill and wrought iron balconette. Second floor has three similar windows in plain reveals with continuous stone sill. Ground floor has to left one two/two horned sash in splayed reveal with stone sill, to right six-panel door with flush, fielded and glazed panels and C19 door furniture in moulded architrave with flat surround with two console brackets, cornice now gone, two steps to pennant paved crossover. Basement has eight/eight sash in plain reveal with stone sill with wrought iron window guard with shaped heads to bars, six-panel door and window in ashlar and concrete blockwork infilling under crossover, no area steps. Raking double dormer with plate glass sashes. Timber bressumer and stone band course over ground floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet continuous with No.8 Marlborough Street (qv). Rear elevation has C19 windows, to first floor, ground floor and first half landing with wrought iron balconettes, first half landing with round head with coloured glass border, mansard raised to full third floor, early six/six sash to left, hanging lavatory and ashlar extension to basement and ground floor with attached wrought iron railing. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with cast arrow heads on limestone bases. HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; Marlborough Street forms one of the four diagonal approaches to St James's Square. Underlease to Charles Viner 16 November 1790 for 96 years from 24 June 1790. SOURCES: (Abstract of title of Sir J F Rivers ... to property sold 1856: DEED PKT 2379 & MAPS).
