MORFORD STREET (West side) No.23 and attached railings and grating (Formerly Listed as: MORFORD STREET Nos.3-27 (Odd)) 11/08/72
GV II
Formerly known as: Nos 10-22 (consec) & No.1 Belvedere Place MORFORD STREET. Two terrace houses, now flats. c1775-1789 with C19 and C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to fronts, now painted, with timber bressumers over ground floors, rubble to basements, ashlar and rubble to rear, double pile mansard roofs, parapeted to front, with pantile to upper slopes, double Romans to lower slopes to front, Welsh Slate to lower slopes to rear, house to left has two ashlar left end stacks with some early clay pots, to right rendered stack to left end of front roof, L-plan stack rising from rear wall to left. EXTERIOR: Each house has three storeys, attic and basement, single bay two-window range. House to left has to first floor two paired plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill and wrought iron balconette, second floor has two similar windows. Ground floor has to left six/six-horned sash in splayed reveal with stone sill, to right C20 five-panel door in stone porch with narrow sides breaking forward to support stone hood with reeded edge. Basement window now blocked. Single dormer with six/six-horned sash. Partial plinth, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet rebuilt in reconstituted stone. House to right has to first floor two paired plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill, second floor has two paired six/six-sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill. Ground floor has to left plate glass horned sash in plain reveal with splayed jambs with stone sill, to right disused C20 six-panel door in plain reveal, concreted crossover. Basement has blocked window. Single dormer with six/six-horned sash. Moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet rebuilt in reconstituted stone. Rear elevations have six/six-sashes, with horns except to ground floor left and second floor right, C20 alterations to basements and C20 porch attached to house to left sheltering new rear access to flats. INTERIOR: Of house to left inspected, staircase to ground floor only; closed string stick baluster staircase with Doric newel with C20 alterations. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: House to right has attached wrought iron railings and gate with urn heads on limestone bases.
