GV II

Pair of terrace houses. 1764-1770 with C19 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, some coursed rubble to rear, slate roofs. PLAN: Generous town houses, with double mansard roof, and entry with staircase to left. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, each one window, all sashes. No.20 has two twelve-pane dormers, above tripartite twelve-pane at two levels, paired twelve-pane to ground floor, and paired plain to basement, at these two levels in splay surrounds. To left six-panel door in architrave, with pediment on pilasters with consoles. No.21 has twelve-pane dormers, but all plain sash below, in same formation as No.20, with identical door and doorcase to left. Basement and ground floor are painted, platband stepped slightly at centre, and modillion cornice stopped to ends, below blocking course and parapet, set higher than adjoining No.19 (qv). Very deep stacks to right in each, and central lead downpipe. Rear has similar configuration to front, with straight drip courses to ground and first floor sashes. INTERIORS: No. 20 (1987) has fine cornicing in hall and over stairs, Doric pilasters to hall arch and features on staircase. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Simple railings on stone curb enclose basement areas and are returned to doorways. HISTORY: The external fabric reveals the staggered building history of the row. The full terrace has broad consistency of detail, but with variations in elevation, building was in small sections, marked by straight joints.
