Summary
A World War One war memorial, with a later inscription to commemorate those who died during World War Two.
Reasons for Designation
The war memorial in St Mary's Churchyard which was erected following the end of World War One is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by this community in the First World War, it is of strong historic and cultural significance both at a local and a national level;
* Architectural interest: a modest, but competent design with good relief carvings.
History
The war memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard commemorates the two local men who died in World War One; a further inscription was added after the Second World War dedicated to a local man who lost his life during this conflict.
Details
A simple cross, probably local Cary stone, with a tapering, chamfered shaft set upon a square plinth, which in turn stands on an octagonal stone base of three steps. There is a carved relief of a laurel wreath containing the dates 1914 /1918 to the front (south) face of the plinth and a sword in relief on the upper part of the shaft. The inscription on the south face reads: 'IN GRATITUDE TO THE MEN OF / YARLINGTON WHO GAVE THEIR SERVICES / FOR KING AND COUNTRY BEYOND THE / SEAS IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918'. A stone plaque on the east face is inscribed: 'IF HIS DUST ONE DAY IS LYING/ IN AN UNFAMILIAR LAND / ENGLAND HE WENT FOR YOU / ENGLAND; THINK OF HIM AS ONE OF THE THOUSANDS / IN THE NOONTIDE AND THE EVEN / AS ONCE HE THOUGHT OF YOU'. On the west side of the memorial the plinth bears the names of two local men who lost their lives in the Great War, while a later plaque on the uppermost step of the base, also to the west face, is inscribed with the name of the local man who died during the Second World War.
