Summary

Reasons for Designation
Wickwar War Memorial, Gloucestershire is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* Historic: it has strong cultural and historical significance within both a local and national context;
* Architectural: it is an elegant and dignified memorial, designed by Norman Jewson, that contributes to its setting in an historic village;
* Communal: it forms a poignant reminder of the effects of tragic world events on this local community.
History
This war memorial is by Norman Jewson (1884-1975), architect and craftsman of the Cotswold group of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The memorial was completed in 1924, and altered post-1945 to include inscriptions commemorating the Second World War. The two tablets commemorating the fallen from the two World Wars which are located in the porch of the church are also by Jewson. The first tablet is of 1920, and the second is of an unknown post-1945 date.
Details
This war memorial of 1924 was designed by Norman Jewson and is built of local limestone. It takes the form of a wheel cross with a column, base and platform. The wheel element of the cross takes an octagonal form and the tapering hexagonal column terminates at the hexagonal base. The base has a moulded edge to the top. An inscription is carved around the upper part of the six fields of the base and reads thus; IN·MEMORY·OF/THE·MEN·OF/WICKWAR/WHO·FELL·IN/THE·GREAT/WAR·1914·1918. The field below the last section of text is inscribed; AND·IN·THE/WORLD·WAR/1939-1945. The remaining fields are blank. A moulded plinth is below the base. A hexagonal platform of two steps surrounded by a paved apron completes the structure. The memorial is situated in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity (listed at Grade II*).
