Reasons for Designation
Chorlton War Memorial, in the churchyard of Chorlton Methodist Church, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a simple yet dignified granite memorial cross.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw a huge wave of public commemoration with tens of thousands of memorials erected in England. One such memorial was erected in c1920 to commemorate those from Chorlton Methodist Church and school who fell in the First World War. Chorlton Methodist Church (not listed) was opened on 2 July 1873.
Details
DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands in the churchyard of Chorlton Methodist Church in a grassy area to the left of the footpath. It is made from granite; at the tip of the four sided granite column, is a cross of Celtic design. The column is set on a small square, inscribed plinth which is set on a much thinner level, inscribed with the dates 1914-1918. Below this, are two more inscribed plinths, the top one is four sided, but with slight narrowing at the top, giving it a sloping effect. The base plinth is larger in circumference, and is square in appearance.
