Summary
First World War memorial of circa 1920, with later additions for the Second World War.
Reasons for Designation
The war memorial, Longdown, Devon is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial, which takes the form of a granite cross.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Longdown as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. In 2006, War Memorials Trust provided a grant for the memorial. The grant was used on a project to clean the stonework, rub down raised lead lettering and re-paint it.
