Reasons for Designation

The war memorial, Longdown, Devon is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20; * Architectural interest: as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial, which takes the form of a granite cross.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Longdown as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

In 2006, War Memorials Trust provided a grant for the memorial. The grant was used on a project to clean the stonework, rub down raised lead lettering and re-paint it.

MATERIALS & PLAN: granite with inset lead lettering. The memorial takes the form of a cross on a tapered shaft with square section, with a stepped base and stepped octagonal plinth.

The monument faces east at a junction at the centre of the village. The cross at the apex has an incised central cross pattern. Below this the tapered shaft has moulded bands to its top and bottom. The square plinth is inscribed with these words: THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE. / 1914 – 1918. Names of the fallen are inscribed to the flanks of the base. On the upper step of the octagonal plinth is inscribed: 1939 – 1945 and on the step below this is AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN / AND IN THE MORNING / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. The fallen from the Second World War are recorded on the flanks of the upper step of the plinth.
