Reasons for Designation

Catcott War Memorial, erected c1920, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20; * Architectural interest: as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial, which takes the form of a limestone shaft supporting an elaborate, carved head with sculptures of servicemen; * Group value: the monument has group value with the church of St Peter, Catcott (Grade I).

History

The memorial appears to date from c. 1920 and was altered after the Second World War.

Details

A village war memorial of c.1920.

MATERIALS and PLAN: the monument is of limestone and has an elaborate, crocketed head with statues, raised on an octagonal shaft. Beneath this is a square base and a plinth of two steps with a platform and border.

The gravelled platform is bordered by a kerb, with taller corner and centre stones, which surrounds the monument. The road front has an inscription on the base which reads 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL AND LOVING MEMORY / OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THE VILLAGE / OF CATCOTT WHO LAID DOWN THEIR / LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918'. To the reverse is inscribed 'THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE'. Names of the fallen are inscribed on the flanks. The steps of the plinth below this have a projecting chamfered moulding to their tops. The shaft dies back to an octagonal upper body and rises to a richly carved band above which is the elaborate head of the monument which has an angled drum with decorative horizontal bands. Two niches contain sculptures of servicemen. That facing west shows a soldier and to the east is a sailor. The niches have cusped heads with crocketed finials surrounding the drum and a carved foliate knop to the top. The bottom of the shaft is engraved '1939 * 1945' with the names of the fallen below.
