Summary
A First World War memorial, dating from 1920.
Reasons for Designation
The war memorial in the forecourt to the Church of St John the Baptist, Frome is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Design interest: it is an accomplished and well-proportioned memorial in the form of a Calvary;
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Grade II* listed Church of St John the Baptist which forms its backdrop.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was erected in the forecourt of St John the Baptist’s Church and was unveiled and dedicated on 24 June 1920. The figure of Christ on the memorial is attributed to a local mason. A war shrine in the form of a carved, wooden triptych was also erected in the churchyard in 1917, but this is no longer extant.
