Reasons for Designation
War Memorial Callington is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a sombre but elegant memorial, well made and with good inscriptions;
* Group value: with the Grade I listed Church of St Mary.
History
The memorial was erected after the First World War, as part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the fallen from communities across the country. The form of the memorial, a Cornish granite cross, was decided upon at a public meeting in February 1919. After some discussion among the subscribers, it was set up in 1921 a prominent position at the roadside next to the entrance to the village churchyard, on land given by St Mary’s Church. After the Second World War, the names of the soldiers of the parish who died in that conflict were added to the memorial.
