Reasons for Designation

Wimbledon Park War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices it made in the First World War; * Design: as a dignified and imposing gabled cross war memorial; * Group value: with the Grade II*-listed St Paul's Church.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at St Paul's Church in Wimbledon Park as a permanent testament to the sacrifices made by the members of the local community. It was unveiled on 24 January 1920, at a cost of £495.

Details

Gabled cross replete with Christ sculpture, atop a tall octagonal shaft. This rests on an octagonal plinth, the faces of which are alternately decorated with quatrefoil-style designs and the names of the Fallen. The plinth rests on a two-step octagonal base; the upper section bears the words "LEST.WE.FORGET" on its front face, with "A.D. 1914" and "A.D. 1918" on the faces to either side.
