History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at St Neot as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who lost their lives in the First World War. It commemorates 24 local servicemen who died during the First World War. St Neot war memorial was constructed in 1921 by J Sweet & Sons of Liskeard at a cost of £78. The metal used for the memorial was donated by a local blacksmith, Edward Kent of Ley, with the railings constructed by his sons Robert and Richard. When the railings were selected for addition to the Second World War metal collection, Edward Kent stood in front of the railings in order to protect them from being removed. Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the fallen of that conflict.
