DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TIMBER FOUND DURING GRAVEL QUARRYING AT HEMINGTON, CASTLE DONNINGTON, 1985.

Author(s): Robert Howard

Fifty two samples were taken from oak timbers associated with a mill dam and a nearby wheel pit discovered during gravel quarrying at Hemington, Castle Donington in 1985. Using dendrochronological analysis, two groups of timbers were formed. The first group of eighteen sample formed a chronology of length 263 years which was dated as spanning the period 834AD to 1096AD. Because of the lack of sapwood, no precise estimate may be made of the felling date. The second group of seventeen samples, mainly posts from the dam, yielded a well replicated chronology of length 70 rings which was dated as spannin the years 1057AD to 1126AD. As the majority of the samples in the second sequence have sapwood present, it is possible to estimate the felling date of these sample as about 1140AD. Tentative dates are suggested for seven other samples leaving ten samples undated.
