Abbey Farm Barn, Snape, Suffolk

Author(s): Richard Bond

This report describes the findings of a recent building study carried out by English Heritage at Abbey Farm barn, a medieval timber-framed building at Snape in Suffolk. The aim of the study was to provide information on the dating and extent of the surviving medieval fabric of the barn, and assess the historical significance of the building and the potential for archaeological building recording. The study was very selective and this report does not constitute a fabric record of the building, nevertheless it is hoped that the information presented here will provide a practical starting point for any future building recording or historical analysis project at the barn. The research project was carried out by Richard Bond of the Historical Analysis and Research team of English Heritage in association with Dr Martin Bridge of the Institute of Archaeology (Dendrochronology Department), University College, London. The project was undertaken at the request of Trudi Hughes, Historic Buildings Architect for the Eastern Region of English Heritage. The fieldwork was carried out between winter 1998 and summer 1999. The drawings used in the report were derived from an existing set of preliminary survey drawings prepared by the Project Architect, Mr Graham Hussey.
