Buckingham Palace - Historic Features Exposed in Trial Pits Between 1995 and 1998

Author(s): Richard Lea

The following report includes archaeological observations on several excavations carried out within the gardens of Buckingham Palace between 1995 and 1998, Figure 66. The recording was requested by Richard Hewlings, English Heritage Inspector of Historic Buildings responsible for the site. In the report, the findings are presented in section 2, as they were found in each of the respective trial holes. Each feature, cut or layer is described separately as a numbered context. The matrices for the trial pits where context numbers were assigned are reproduced in Figure 68. The findings are then interpreted in section 3 according to a broad chronological sequence. The report includes a reappraisal of the 1995 Trial Pit, although this involves no significant alteration to the earlier findings issued in my report of November 1995.
