Elterwater Gunpowder Works, Cumbria: an Archaeological and Historical Survey: Survey Report

Author(s): Marcus Jecock, Amy Lax, Christopher Dunn

In 2001, English Heritage carried out survey and analysis of the site of the former Elterwater Gunpowder Works, in Cumbria. The investigation combined archaeological and documentary evidence to show how between 1824 and 1930 the works evolved from an initial small core area of c 2 acres (0.82ha) centred around early corn and fulling mills, to cover eventually an area in excess of ten times that size. In addition, it identified that many of the factory buildings moved location and/or changed their function during those 106 years.
