TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF TIMBERS FROM THE WHITE HART HOTEL, MARKET PLACE, SPALDING, LINCOLNSHIRE
Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge
A dendrochronological study of two parts of the complex of interconnected buildings forming the White Hart Hotel, Market Place, Spalding, was undertaken in the early stages of its renovation in order to inform future repairs during its change of use, and date the earliest extant sections. The core of the front range was thought on stylistic grounds to be late-fifteenth century, and the felling date of the timbers used (AD 1477-8) confirms this. A single timber from the west rear range had a felling date range suggesting potentially it could be a few years earlier. However, the degree of crossmatching between all the dated timbers, coupled with the architectural evidence, suggests that these two ranges are coeval.
