LEICESTER, THE SHIRES 1988 EXCAVATIONS: THE ANIMAL BONES FROM THE MEDIEVAL DEPOSITS AT ST PETER'S LANE

Most of the bones recorded from this excavation were from the domestic food animals: cattle, sheep/goat and pig. The composition of this part of the assemblage is very similar to that already seen at Little Lane and probably reflects part of the general pattern of urban waste disposal and bone survival. Of particular interest are the domestic species not commonly exploited for food: horse, dog and cat. Abundant remains of these animals were found in phases 10 - 12 and may indicate the use of this site for the disposal of non-household refuse. Further specialised bone debris was seen in F20 where large numbers of bones from goose wing tips were recovered. Altogether this is an interesting assemblage with particular regard to the differences between the contempary and adjacent site at Little Lane. The contrast lies between the "high status" food species at Little Lane, probably associated with the occupants of the Lord's Place, and the non food, possibly industrial, bone waste at St Peter's Lane.
