SOIL REPORT ON THE 1988 EXCAVATIONS AT SLAUGHTERHOUSE LANE, NEWARK, NOTTS.

Author(s): Matt Canti

A layer of material beneath rampart construction deposits at Slaughterhouse Lane, Newark has been analysed to determine whether it was a buried soil or transported material. Evidence from micromorphology and particle size analysis points to a highly local origin for the soil, but is equivocal on the issue of disturbance. The concept of an intact profile can be rejected on archaeological and macromorphological grounds, but further resolution of the degree of transport is not possible owing to the featureless nature of the soil fabric.
