CRUCIBLE SHERDS FROM THE FISHERGATE EXCAVATIONS IN YORK.

Author(s): Justine Bayley

Some three dozen crucible sherds and ten groups of deeply vitrified sherds of unknown metallurgical function were examined and the metal-rich deposits on them analysed qualitatively by XRF. Most are thought to be of Anglian date (8th to early 9th century) and were used to melt bronzes and possibly gunmetals. Silver was also found on a few sherds.
